My Christmas in Sweden... Full & Fat.

My Christmas in Sweden… Full & Fat.

Saturday, December 26, 2009 No Comments

So, it’s ‘boxing day’. And I feel fuller than a very full thing after the last two days of over-eating.

On Christmas Eve, the day the Swedes traditionally celebrate Christmas, I ate for a marathon of session spread over about 4 hours in the evening. This was following a largish lunch earlier in the day, where we ate Swedish Christmas Ham with potatoes, veg, and a rich creamy mustard sauce.

snowsweden-3

Or should that be “God Jul och Gott Nytt År” now I’m living in Sweden. Well at last, here it is, Christmas has arrived. At least here in Sweden anyway. You guys in the UK have one more day to wait. I can’t find a reasonable explanation why, but it seems the Swedes do their [...]

Some time ago I wrote a short blog containing my top ten reasons for why someone might want to emigrate from the UK to Sweden. I mentioned that I didn’t really think that one reason would be because of Sweden’s wonderful nature… essentially because the UK has it’s own very special wildlife and landscapes that are just as impressive.

Even more snow in Sweden...

Even more snow in Sweden…

Compared to the previous photo of this pump, much more snow has settled...

So, this evening I posted some photos of the snow here… but as I was uploading them, more and more snow fell. So tonight, we went for a ‘play’ in the snow and it was fantastic… perfect snow for snowballs, and for making lovely scenery on the bushes, trees, and house… Okay, that’s it now. [...]

Snowing in Sweden

Here's a pheasant that I saw slowly walking around in the garden. Walking on an big old log. I took the photo from the kitchen window so it's a bit blurry.

We’ve had snow for a couple of days in Sweden. Today it started to melt a little, but now this evening it appears to be settling again, and more is forecast. I thought I’d snap some photos around the house just before it went dark, so that I could remember my first proper snowy winter [...]

Lottis making Swedish cakes

I knew from previous discussions with Swedish people that 13th December was ‘Lucia day’. I saw the odd ornament out on people’s sideboard or windowsill from previous Christmas’ when I visited Sweden, and I had seen the odd photo. All I really knew was that there’s a girl called Lucia who has candles in her [...]

Winter Sunset in Sweden

I’ve just been out walking the dogs, and the most amazing sunset unfolded before my eyes. It’s been a clear but crisp day here in Sweden today (1st December). As the sun was setting on my drive back home I didn’t realise just what was about to happen. But about 20 minutes later, whilst I [...]

Wild Boar Sweden

I was just driving home thinking to myself what a lovely night it was. The sky was all red as the sun was just setting over the hills in Skåna, south Sweden…. when I saw a large brown animal. Hairy on the back, and very stocky. At first, I couldn’t see what it was, then [...]

soderasen walk 1

Today was a ‘no work’ day. Nothing to do with DIY, house, garden, or work related activities allowed. Just time to chill and relax a bit. And give the dogs some much needed attention and fun. So we went off to a great place called “Söderåsen”. This is a national park, less than 20 minutes [...]

autumn tree1

There was a time, just last year, when Autumn jobs meant trying to finish of old projects at work that had been hanging around my in-tray from my less productive periods during the summer, and discussing which venue we should book the work Christmas party at this year…. However, things are different now. Now it [...]

boxplants-1

The gardens here are full of lovely mature box plants. Unfortunately they’re too much for us to deal with here, mostly planted in areas that aren’t suitable for our future plans for the garden. As such, we’ve been investigating possibilities to sell them as oppose to just digging them up and destroying them. There’s far [...]

This evening I was able to have an early bonfire night… Yey!! Even though Sweden don’t really have Bonfire night as we do (obviously), I thought I might have my own little bonfire anyway out here! The reason for today’s bonfire was that today I’ve been cleaning out one of the rooms in the barn [...]

Door and frame after removal from wall

Today has been very productive. I decided to get up and start clearing the kitchen out, ready for some demolition. I was sick to the back teeth of the sight of apples, so, all thoughts of baking behind me, I turned myself from domestic goddess in to Bob the Builder, or more accurately, Don the [...]

Young Boy Traveling Down the Road with Dog

Young Traveler from Stock Photography I’ve had a couple of questions from people who’ve found my blog on the internet, and asked how I transported my two dogs from the UK to Sweden. So here’s some information that will hopefully prove useful to others. First of all, I did my research way in advance. Things [...]

Engine found in bushes... Almost everything cut back and cleared... and then I find this ENGINE hidden deep in the bushes that were once here. My topiary on the huge overgrown box plant is also almost complete here!

Today I’ve been digging up yet more trees and shrubs, and even tried my hand at some topiary!! I’ve now cleared by sides of the drive entrance into the courtyard, which will eventually get a nice big gate between the two, and graveled. It as previously full of climing plants up the walls, trees that [...]
